Have you seen “How to Train Your Hobby”? It’s one of the first away missions done by Ashtabula Hobby Talk.

“How to Train Your Hobby” really does feel like where everything clicked for Ashtabula Hobby Talk.

There was something different about walking into the Conneaut Historical Railway Museum that day. It wasn’t just another location shoot. It was stepping into a place most people in the area drive past without realizing what’s sitting there — pieces of the Nickel Plate Road, the New York Central Railroad, and a whole chapter of regional history quietly preserved by volunteers.

What made that episode land wasn’t just the massive Berkshire locomotive or the details about coal tenders and sand domes. It was Erick. The way he connected his grandfather to that engine changed the tone completely. Suddenly it wasn’t a train — it was family. It was pride. It was a grandson honoring work done by restoring a builder’s plate and choosing not to erase the name of the man who first made it. That moment said more about his hobby than any technical explanation ever could.

You could feel the dynamic too. Nemo seeing it all with fresh eyes, asking the questions anyone would ask. Rykus bringing that lived-in familiarity of someone who grew up walking past it. And Erick, not just showing artifacts, but sharing something personal. That blend gives this episode warmth.

“Oh, absolutely, she’s a beautiful remnant of the past and I’m honored that I get to to take care of her.”

Erick
